Downtown Nanaimo is filled with a vibrant arts culture. It is bursting with history and an energetic community.
The Challenge
The downtown area of Nanaimo can be hard to navigate based on the current wayfinding system and lack of consistent branding. It is filled with signage that showcases differing styles and looks to them, it leaves tourists and even locals to be glued to their phones missing all the rich art culture that this area hosts.

The Approach
The approach to achieving a strong identity and wayfinding system was to utilize the downtown area’s rich culture through energetic, and bold colours that will differentiate the three districts.
Icons for main attractions with in the downtown area.
The districts are divided by the use of the brand colours
The signage uses beach wood to play to the environment of the downtown area. Each signage will consist of unified icons that will aid viewers in efficiently navigating to their destination. And finally, to showcase the rich history, a public installation will feature historical facts about the downtown area through an interactive history arch.
